Library 2.0 and the Simpsons

•March 12, 2009 • 2 Comments

I am on desk duty wondering why the half naked children running around the picture book section are not more interested in books with words.
The child in question is demanding loudly to her designated carer / mother (while crying and jumping up and down) that she wants her brightly coloured Simpsons magazine.
Strangely enough the only consolation that the future of Library 2.0 holds for her at the moment is that the self issue makes an entertaining noise of “beep”.
And she doesn’t get her magazine either – her designated carer doesn’t think its appropriate.
What she will get in the future, if her parents are not driven to infanticide, will be web portal driven libraries. At the moment libraries provide users with books (fiction and non-fiction), magazines (including the Simpsons), DVD’s (yes, also including the Simpsons), videos, CD’s, tapes and talking books and through our catalogues, website AOL’s. We can send people letters when their reserves are ready, or SMS them or email them. If they want us to.
Now when our half naked screaming patron has grown into maturity she will be able to sit at home (or anywhere in the world using her internet portal active telephone or god-forbid, implant) and reserve these DVDs and magazines (if she hasn’t grown out of the Simpsons). Library 2.0 also offers the future possibility of e-libraries that have pdf versions of the magazine through e-subscription, streaming videos to access through the library’s website, podcasts to listen and watch on a daily basis on your phone.
But I suspect nobody will be getting anything until we shut up and we stop jumping up and down screaming because we want our brightly coloured shiny service right NOW!

A Night Out To The Movies

•February 15, 2009 • Leave a Comment

My beautiful girlfriend took me to the movies for Valentines Day.

One of my favourites as well: Breakfast At Tiffany’s.

Back in the Nineties when I was working as a kitchenhand cum steward for the Hobart Vista Hotel, I used to finish work often around 3am.  After walking home at 3am over the Derwent Bridge, with the sun rising and the birds chirping away, and the first sign of the world getting up, brushing its teeth and making its coffee, I would walk in the door, make myself a martini and then, yup you guessed it, watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s until I either a) fell asleep on the couch or b) dragged my ass to bed and fell asleep there, or c) made coffee and went to University for class and lectures.

Instead tonight I got to watch it at the Moonlight Cinema in the comfort of Melbourne’s Botanical Gardens on a giant inflatable screen.

I love my girlfriend!  I love Melbourne!

Valentines Day

I had to get out of bed at 6am this Morning.
Sitting up I sculled the last of the now tepid water I keep next to the bed.
Balefully looking at the sleeping body next me I realised it was Saturday. Why had Zoe woken up at 5am and decided to read for half an hour before going back to bed? Another of life’s mysteries. I needed at least two espressos to get out the door.
This was before realising it was Day whatever of the Detox Diet that Zoe and I had started when we got back fron Hobart.
Relishing and releasing the urge for freshly made coffee from our sleek Breville BarVista using Brother Baba Budan grounds freshly crushed in our Krupps coffee grinder, I went and picked some parsley from our garden conveniently located out the front door.
Gritting my teeth I measured out two 5ml measures of Bitters into respective wine glasses and topped then up with cold soda water. Into two water glasses I squeezed the juice from half a lemon and then added some lukewarm tap water. Stumbling over to the fridge I grabbed celery, ginger and some kiwi fruit. Taking the bitters, and the lemon juice back into the bedroom I croaked “bitters” and placed Zoe’s two glasses next to the bed. I sculled mine down taking special care to relish the feeling of nausea that accompany my morning dose. I pulled some clothes on and walked back to the kitchen and proceeded to use the juicer to make a tasty parsley, celery, kiwi and lemon juice for breakfast. Yum. Making sure that Zoe had a full glass for her within easy reach, I whispered “breakfast”, before pottering off to get ready for work.
